Axes

Raven Tools: Hand-forged tools by Stark Raven Studios

Axes

This is our line of specialty axes for woodworking and wilderness use.

Look for more designs to come.

Our axes are all forged by hand using traditional tools and techniques. We also hand-carve each handle from native white ash or yellow birch, and make the leather sheaths that come with every axe.

Because of a rather unwieldy backlog, I am not taking payments on new orders right now. This is why all my products currently show as sold out.

I am probably at least a year away from beginning any new orders at this time.

We have started a waiting list for orders of ironwork; please read more in the "ordering Options" sidebar.

A Sneak Peek at Things to Come

Kiev Axe

This is a custom axe I completed in June of 2015. Ever since, I've been wanting to include a simpler version (leaving out the extra decorative work on the axe head and the carved handle) in my lineup.

Right now, I'm swamped with pending jobs, but as I work to reduce my backlog, this is one of several new tools I want to add to my standard offerings.

Scandinavian Carving Hatchet

Developed with spoon carvers in mind and designed along traditional Scandinavian lines, the head of this carving hatchet weighs 24 oz and can be ordered with a 14" ash handle or without, so you can carve your own.

The Little Shaver

Having had a few requests for a lighter version of our Scandinavian Carving Hatchet, we've developed the Little Shaver. It has the same geometry and cutting characteristics as its bigger cousin, but the head weighs only 18 oz. This saves effort and fatigue, making carving a little bit easier, so you can work longer before tiring out. It's also a great choice if you're new to carving with a hatchet.

Polissoirs!

We also make and sell burnishers to put a fine finish on your woodworking projects. They can be used to put a subtle sheen on unfinished wood, or to apply and polish a wax finish.

Please note: our burnishers usually take 2 weeks or less from time of order to delivery.

Early Norse Belt Axe

This ax is based on Scandinavian axes dating to the 7th to 9th centuries, from just before and into the first half of the Viking period. It's designed to suit the same purposes as our Viking Belt Axe: it's the right size and weight for a tomahawk or throwing axe, and it's a great axe for camp chores.

The head of this ax weighs 18 oz and it can be ordered alone or with a 19" ash handle.

Viking Belt Axe

This ax is based on the style of some Scandinavian axes dating mostly to the latter part of the Viking period (8th - 11th century). It's sort of a baby brother (sister?) to our Bearded Axe, and is designed to suit the same purposes of our Early Norse Belt Axe -- it's the right size and weight for a Viking-style tomahawk or throwing axe, and it's a great axe for camp chores, with a style that makes it stand out among other tools made for these purposes.

The head of this ax weighs 18 oz and it can be ordered alone or with a 19" ash handle.

Bearded Axe

This is an axe in Scandinavian style, useful for general puropses including limbing, bucking and felling, and splitting small stock without too many large knots. With a relatively light 2 lb. head measuring about 7" long with a 5" cutting edge, it's an ideal camp axe or limbing ax.
