We're gearing up for another fun event: Steam Up Days in Wabeno Wisconsin. We've been attending this event for thirteen years or so now, and while it is usually the hottest time of year to be outside, we wouldn't miss it! We've met a lot of really great folks there and our ironwork and brooms have been very popular.
During the event, Dan does a blacksmithing demonstration, often making items upon request and when Saga isn't tying brooms during the event, she helps to explain some of the procedures that go into their work as artisans.
But there's all sorts of stuff going on at Steam Up Days. The link above will take you to a schedule of events for the weekend: music and dancing every night, a pig roast, even pig wrestling, tractor pulls, a tractor parade, lots of food and other crafters and exhibitors besides just us -- it's just plain fun.
Also, Wabeno has one of just three Phoenix Log Haulers still in operation in North America, and they run it around the grounds during the event.
Fun fact: at the beginning of the video above (from 2007), you can see our truck and tarp at the left of the screen. We're quickly upstaged by the hauler, as is everything else, naturally. We just don't even try to talk when she rolls by....
Saga will be teaching another acrylic Paint 'n' Take class Thursday, August 14th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Downtown Art Place (DAP) in Ironwood, Michigan. Come join us for a couple hours of fun as Saga guides you through painting a landscape ( or two!). The step by step process will have you bringing home a finished masterpiece. Supplies are provided. Spcae is limited, so preregistration is recommended. Call the DAP for registration and details. 906-285-7300.
Come join Saga in her studio and learn how to paint your favorite fur (or feathered) friend.
The Pet Portrait series is 4 weeks long and meets Tuesday evenings starting on August 12th and goes through September 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The cost per class night is $25.00 which includes all supplies. Saga will take you step by step through the process of creating an effective portrait of your friend. Space is limited, so preregistration is required. We look forward to seeing you!
Come and join us for Laura Days in Pepin, Wisconsin!
We will be part of a traditional skills village along with other artisans living and working as the people did in Laura Ingalls Wilder's day. This small historic "village" will be set up in the time period from when Laura's family built their first house in Pepin in the latter half of the 19th century. Everyone in the village will be dressed and working from that time period. There will be weavers, candle makers, potters, blacksmiths, tinkers, a tinsmith, spinners, woodcarvers and furniture makers, as well as us tying brooms and possibly doing some spoon carving as well.
We'll have plenty of hand-tied brooms, pot-scrubbers and our new wood burnishers on hand, plus, we'll be demonstrating how we make our brooms. We may also have some of our woodcarving tools on hand for folks to see and try. Dan may demonstrate how to rough out and carve a spoon as well.
Close to the Twin Cities, Eau Claire and LaCrosse, and right across the Mississippi River from Wabasha (of Grumpy Old Men fame), it's sure to be an event worth visiting and interacting with! ! For more information and directions, check out their website. http://lauradays.org/
Saga has an exciting week planned for the students at this year's Discovery Art Camp, in Presque Isle Wisconsin. This years camp starts each day at the river, where Licia from the Discovery Center, in Manitowish Waters, will be teaching the campers about aquatic life. From there, everyone will be meeting back at the Presque Isle community center, where Saga will guide them through painting their own watery worlds, based on what they've learned about aquatic life from Licia. Each student will have their own 4'x7' ( feet, not inches) canvas to work on and they will be learning various painting techniques with acrylics as well as incorporating 3D elements into their paintings with such items as, :swim noodles, cardboard tubes, old sheets and even branches foraged or found on the way back to the community center from the river.
Each day the campers will learn a new technique to incorporate into their world and with the help of a really great bunch of volunteers, everyone will be well supplied with paint and tools to make their paintings come to life!
Sunday, August 18th, all of the Campers get to have an art show all their own to debut their masterpieces. All student art will have places of honor in the Presque Isle Library during the annual Presque Isle Fine Arts show. It should be a treasure for the senses! Be sure to come down and see what the students from art camp can do!!!
Whew! This summer has been busy. busy busy!!!!! We will be doing a blacksmithing and broom tying demonstration at the Iron County Fair in Saxon, Wisconsin, August 2nd - 4th. Tentatively, we'll be there from noon to 7:00pm each day, but depending on the traffic and crowds going through the fair, times may be extended.
Be sure to come and check out the activities. There will be live music, livestock competitions, art, canning and cooking and gardening competitions, horses and of course, the carnie rides! And much more besides than we could possibly hope to include here....
It should prove to be a great weekend!
It will be a great weekend for a drive into the U.P. Countryside! On July 27th and 28th, we will be at the Ontonagon County Fair, in Greenland, Michigan. Dan will be working in the on-site blacksmith shop doing forge-work demonstrations, and Saga will be set up in our rustic tarp shelter with her brooms and illustrations, and perhaps demonstrating some weaving!
There will be a lot to see on site: the animal barns feature local livestock, there's a barn set-up to display the work of local artisans, there will be horses and even a motocross competition! Saturday morning features a pancake breakfast and there's usually a pig roast Saturday night. Often there are local musicians playing in the gazebo to entertain the crowds.
We'll be set up at the Iron County museum grounds all day, Friday July 26, 2013 during the Museum's open house as part of the Iron County Heritage Festival in Hurley. Dan will be demonstrating the art of blacksmithing, using tools and techniques that would have been used during the founding of Hurley and the surrounding area. Saga will be demonstrating the craft of hand tying brooms as they would have been made during the 19th century.
We use the same techniques in our work in our blacksmith shop and studio. Be sure to come to Hurley and check out the Iron County Heritage Festival and experience a piece of history!
We are looking forward to returning to the Northern Folk Gathering this year, sharing good times with a lot of great folks.
The event is held at St. Croix State Park near Hinckley, Minnesota. It's a lovely park with lots of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
We'll have some of our hand-crafted brooms and ironwork on hand, as well as Saga's folklore art, both prints and originals.
These will be available in the crafters' cabin. Dan will probably bring some spoons along as well: some to sell, some to work on -- impromptu demos and maybe even a lesson or two are a possibility!
Wisconsin's Department of Tourism has been hosting Artist Interactive events and various venues across Northern Wisconsin. This June, they will be featuring a month long art exhibit in the Presque Isle library and on the 19th, from 10:am to 3:00pm, there is a whole day of artists demonstrating or giving people a chance at trying some of the arts on their own,
Dan will be doing a spoon carving demonstration and Saga will be doing a broom tying demonstration as well as offering lessons in broom tying from 11:00am to 2:00pm for $25.00 per student. All materials are included and you get to take home your own hand tied broom!
