Raven Tools: Hand-forged tools by Stark Raven Studios
Our stock knives are based on traditional tools designed for carving wooden shoes, clogs, and lasts.
Our tools are all forged by hand using traditional tools and techniques. We also hand-carve each handle from native hardwood, and make the blade guards that come with every stock knife.
This is a painstaking and time-consuming process, and a labor of love.
We anticipate a lead time of 9 months from time of order to delivery.
We hope to be able to shorten lead times by spring 2017.
Heavy Stock Knife
At about 6.5 lbs., our Heavy Stock Knife is a weighty and wieldy tool, one we designed based on research and inquiries made of people who have used such tools. Our favorite of the old stock knives we've seen of this heavy style is one used by Jeremy Atkinson. It became our primary model for our own design.
The blade is nearly 1/2" thick at the spine and 3" wide. The shaft to which the hardwood handle is mounted is of 3/4" square cross section near the blade, tapering to about 9/16" round just below the handle; the overall length of this knife is 39".
Note that the knife pictured is for right-handed carvers: you work with the flat of the blade away from you. This gives you the control you need to be able to cut curved forms. So it is important to specify whether you need a right-handed or left-handed tool!

Customized Tool Handles
Any tool we sell that has a wooden handle can be personalized by adding a simple design of your choice. This option includes such designs as initials, monograms, and ciphers; names; simple lettering designs up to 8 characters; and simple line art.
Other decorative options are available, such as carving and/or woodburning and kolrosing in more intricate designs, or lengthy inscriptions. Please contact us to inquire about those possibilities and appropriate pricing.

Light Stock Knife
This is a fairly lightweight version of the tool, and appears to be more of a continental style, where the heavy stock knife appears to be more typically British.
The blade of the light stock knife is about 5/16" thick at the spine and 1-3/4" wide. The shaft to which the maple handle is mounted is of 1/2" x 1" cross section, tapering to 1/2" square where it meets the hardwood handle; the overall length of this knife is 33", with about a 16" cutting edge.
Note that the pictures here show the side facing away from the worker on a left-handed knife (the summer pics); the winter shots show the back side (the side facing the carver in use) of a right-handed knife. You work with the flat of the blade away from you, the beveled face of the tool against the workpiece, and the handle in your dominant hand. This gives you the control you need to be able to cut curved forms. So it is important to specify whether you need a right-handed or left-handed tool!

We also make and sell burnishers for putting a fine finish on your woodworking projects. They can be used to put a subtle sheen on unfinished wood, or can be used to apply and polish a wax finish.
We offer two sizes of burnishers for woodworkers. We have 1" x 4" and 1 -1/4" x 5" burnishers (sizes are approximate). All of our burnishers are handmade from broomcorn. We offer them either unwaxed or prewaxed with beeswax (note: beeswax will need to be reapplied for repeated use).
Please note: Our burnishers usually take 2 weeks or less from time of order to delivery.
